Integrative, Inclusive, and Evidence-Informed Approaches to Weight Management
Date: Friday October 24, 2025 (9am-4:30pm)
Format: Live Online
Fee:
Regular: $197
Audience: Naturopathic Doctors and Allied Health Professionals
Course Description
The 2025 Weight Management Symposium brings together leading naturopathic doctors to explore the evolving landscape of weight care through an integrative, whole-person lens. As weight-related health challenges continue to rise alongside the demand for personalized and respectful care, this one-day continuing education event equips practitioners with the tools, insights, and confidence to support diverse patients navigating complex weight journeys.
With a focus on clinical excellence, inclusivity, and collaboration, the symposium features five in-depth sessions that examine the physiological, psychological, social, and pharmaceutical factors influencing weight. From GLP-1 receptor agonists to trauma-informed care, from PCOS to midlife metabolism, each session provides practical strategies rooted in naturopathic principles and current best practices.
Symposium Sessions:
1. Supporting Patients Using Weight Loss Medications in an Integrative Care Model
As the use of anti-obesity medications grows, naturopathic doctors are increasingly encountering patients who are either curious about these therapies or actively using them. This session will explore the evolving role of naturopathic doctors within an integrative care model that includes weight loss medications, such as GLP- 1 receptor agonists and other emerging therapies. Participants will learn how to effectively collaborate with prescribing practitioners, optimize patient outcomes through foundational naturopathic care, and address common side effects and metabolic adaptations. The session will emphasize how naturopathic principles—including nutrition, lifestyle, and patient-centered coaching—can be leveraged to enhance long-term success, reduce medication reliance, and support sustainable behaviour change. This training is ideal for NDs who want to stay clinically relevant, support patients navigating complex weight journeys, and practice from a place of collaboration, curiosity, and comprehensive care.
Time: 9:00–10:00 AM EST

To define the role of naturopathic doctors in an integrative care model for patients using anti-obesity medications
To identify and manage common side effects, nutritional concerns, and physical consequences of pharmacologically induced weight loss
To apply behavioural, nutritional, and lifestyle interventions that support sustainable weight loss and reduce long-term reliance on medication
To integrate assessment tools (labs, nutritional assessments, and body composition scans) to guide naturopathic interventions and support collaborative medication titration
To illustrate key concepts using real-world case studies that demonstrate ND–MD collaboration, individualized care planning, and patient outcomes
2. From Trauma to Triglycerides: Trauma-Informed Metabolic Care for Underserved Populations
The session provides evidence-based insights into how early-life adversity and chronic stress contribute to the development and persistence of obesity and metabolic disease, particularly in underserved rural populations. Participants will explore current research on the biological embedding of trauma, review clinical guidelines in obesity medicine, and assess the structural and systemic challenges faced by rural Ontarians in accessing metabolic care. Special emphasis will be placed on the naturopathic doctor’s role in interprofessional collaboration with family physicians and allied health professionals. The course will outline relevant aspects of the naturopathic scope of practice in Ontario, including diagnosis, lab testing, patient education, and care coordination. Designed for practicing NDs, this course offers practical clinical strategies and communication tools for working within an integrative model of care for obesity medicine.

Learning Objectives:
To review the effect of weight loss on PCOS
To determine the role that genes play in body weight in patients with PCOS
To discuss lifestyle interventions for PCOS and weight management
To acknowledge the role of medication in weight management
To identify the research, if any, on supplements for weight management
4. Trauma and the Nervous System in Weight Management
In this presentation we are going to look at our relationship with food from the way that it is perceived by the nervous system. Disordered eating is this idea that food takes on a meaning outside of nutrition. When this happens it means that food choices will not be made just for nutrition but often for other purposes. When food gets intertwined with our nervous system survival instinct it can prevent us from using food as nutrition and to support overall weight loss. We will go through how to screen for disordered eating in your own practice and the ways that food can become associated with our trauma response. We will talk about how to support food when it has a role for our nervous system outside of just nutrition and where we as NDs can start to change this relationship with food and help our patients understand what is happening.
Time: 2:00–3:00 PM EST
Instructor: Dr. Alexandra Sisam, ND
Alexandra Sisam is a Naturopathic Doctor licensed in Ontario BC and NWT. She completed her 4 year Doctor of Naturopathy from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine graduating in 2018. Since then she has worked primarily in mental health with a special focus on disordered eating and trauma around the relationship with food. This has evolved into a practice that centers around nervous system health in all capacities. She works with patients with stress around food in any capacity and has treated a wide range of disordered eating patterns including those that fit diagnostic criteria for eating disorders and those that do not. She is very interested in the way that our actions and overall mental health is impacted by the many physical processes. She has pursued further certifications in reiki, trauma training, homeopathy and mind-body counselling. She provides trauma informed care. She currently practices out of the Clara Clinic in Toronto, Ontario and Bay Wellness in Vancouver, BC.
Learning Objectives:
To understand the role of trauma in the body and how it relates to our cortisol response
To identify when food is being used to soothe our nervous system
To identify when patients are eating for nourishment and when food is being used for a different meaning
To recognize when cortisol responses are determining eating behaviours (from a nervous system perspective)
To learn how to support the nervous system to change the relationship with food
5. Rebalancing Metabolism in Midlife: An Integrative, Personalized Approach
Midlife women often struggle with unexplained weight gain, insulin resistance, fatigue, and inflammation—symptoms that reflect deeper metabolic and hormonal changes rather than a simple caloric imbalance. In this clinical session, Dr. Tannaz Mokhtari, ND, draws on over 20 years of experience to explore how integrative, personalized care can restore metabolic and hormonal resilience, supporting sustainable weight regulation during the perimenopausal and menopausal transition. Attendees will learn how to apply lab-informed strategies, individualized nutrition, and whole-person interventions to address the hormonal shifts that influence appetite, fat distribution, insulin sensitivity, and mood. The course emphasizes respectful, trauma-aware care, and presents real-world case studies to demonstrate how metabolic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors interact in complex but clinically actionable ways. Whether you're new to working with midlife patients or refining your approach to hormonal and metabolic care, this session will provide practical tools to support outcomes that go beyond the scale—enhancing energy, digestion, mood, and patient confidence.
