Exercise, Metabolism, and Cancer Outcomes: Translating Mechanisms into Care
Course Description:
Exercise is a cornerstone of cancer care across the survivorship continuum, supporting quality of life and potentially improving clinical outcomes. By influencing metabolism and key pathways linked to cancer progression—such as inflammation, insulin/glucose regulation, immune function, hormonal signaling, oxidative stress, and genomic stability - physical activity may help mitigate disease and treatment effects and reduce risk of recurrence.
This talk reviews proposed mechanisms, the evidence linking activity to cancer outcomes, safety considerations by cancer type and stage, and practical strategies for prescribing exercise that patients can sustain.
Learning Objectives:
1. Summarize the evidence on physical activity’s effects on cancer outcomes, including survival, symptom management, and quality of life.
2. Describe physiological pathways involved in cancer progression that may be positively influenced by physical activity.
3. Identify risks and safety considerations for physical activity in cancer care, by cancer type and stage.
4. Apply practical techniques and resources to support behavior change and sustained participation in physical activity.
