In this presentation, Dr. Edwards presents evidence from the current literature on the effects of spiritual practice and the capacities of consciousness and applicability to the practice of Naturopathic Medicine.

Field Applications in Botanical Medicine: Edible and medicinal weeds of the Pacific Northwest. Join Herbalist and naturopathic doctor Glen Nagel and a field class of Northwest weeds. We will focus on plant identification, parts used and how to blend into a wild salad. Walking around the grounds and gardens of NUNM we will identify and eat over 20 medicinal and edible plants.

This presentation offers an overview to the energetic approach to food through the lens of Chinese medicine. The power of food as medicine is well documented in the Chinese medicinal literature and offers people today a direct way to engage with eating in a healthful and delicious manner. Food energetics is a powerful compliment to any health and medical practice when making food recommendations to improve health outcomes.This class introduces the fundamentals of food energetics through the thermal nature (Qi) of food, flavors of food and various cooking methods throughout the seasons as a way to adapt everyday eating for optimal health.

Traditional, holistic systems of medicine understand that in order to offer remedies and true paths to healing we must be able to not only know their actions, but their qualities and what areas of the body they affect. Today, evidence-based medicine values data in the form of clinical trials. We will be gathering data in the form of organoleptic learning, finding patterns through sipping tea and doing a plant proving. Plant sits often are used to help understand the spirit of the plant, but in this workshop we dissect the physiological workings of a plant we ingest. We look at flavors, qualities, and how to sort through and define actions in the body.

In clinical care of patients, the spiritual aspects can be easily overlooked, and yet recognition may be central in the patient’s symptom presentation, and in providing optimal care. This presentation focuses on how to assess the spiritual aspects, in practical clinical questions, and in common spiritual themes that may be present in clinical situations. The presentation discusses “Near Death Experience” elements, comparison to delirium, and the challenges of various biological theories in understanding the “NDE”. It is vital that health care workers can recognize when a patient has had an “NDE,” and not minimize or discount such an important or possibly unexplained experience for the patient. NDE stories can be used to help patients struggling with fear of dying, with grief, with suicidal ideation, or lack of purpose. Finally, understanding the NDE can broaden our perspectives of consciousness; of how we perceive life and death; and how we can come to terms with the end of life for ourselves and for our patients.
